We envision a future where artificial general intelligence (AGI) and artificial superintelligence (ASI) are developed openly, collaboratively, and for the benefit of all humanity—not controlled by a select few entities.
We believe that the development of artificial general intelligence is inevitable. The question is not if, but when—and more importantly, how and by whom. We are committed to ensuring that this transformative technology is developed in the open, with transparent processes and distributed benefits.
The current AI landscape is dominated by powerful but ultimately limited models, each controlled by different organizations with their own interests. We believe the path to AGI lies in breaking down these silos, combining the strengths of multiple approaches, and creating systems that are more than the sum of their parts.
Open source is not just a development methodology for us—it's a philosophical commitment to ensuring that the most powerful technologies of the future remain accessible to all. By developing AGI in the open, we create the conditions for broad participation, diverse perspectives, and distributed benefits.
While we believe that technological progress toward AGI should not be artificially constrained, we are committed to developing these technologies responsibly. This means prioritizing safety research, building in robust safeguards, and ensuring that our systems remain aligned with human values and interests as they grow more capable.
We don't see AGI as replacing humans, but rather as extending human capabilities. Our Mentat project, inspired by the human computers of Frank Herbert's Dune, exemplifies this vision—creating systems that enhance human cognitive abilities and work in partnership with us to solve the most challenging problems facing humanity.
